Nunan Street Fire

CHARLESTON, SC - WCBD --
Charleston firefighters put out a massive fire that destroyed two homes and damaged at least one other on Nunan Street Wednesday morning.

Firefighters responded to the call just before 10 a.m. and arrived to find three homes burning. The middle house, which is where the flames were concentrated, collapsed shortly after firefighters arrived.

It took firefighters awhile to put out hot spots.

At least one of the homes was being renovated, but whether people lived in the others is not yet known.

Firefighters are now beginning the investigation into the cause of the fire, but right now they do not suspect this is the work of the serial arsonist.

No One...

Love After War

Go To Hell

Here's the situation, yes, the devil knows me well
See I'm trying to do my best not to go to hell
I'm counting all my blessings as I walk the narrow road
Victory is near, that's what I've been told

I can feel it getting closer, closer everyday
I wanna be a warrior of everything I say
There's trials in the valley, take me upstream
I need to feel this water rolling down over me
Rolling down over me

I can see my name written across the sky
Ravens started flying, I saw tears in their eyes
There was fires in the mountains and storms in the sea
Winds in the valley, rushing into me

Knock and it will open, seek and you'll be fine
You're just a flower and the seed is your mind
Clouds will bring us water and the sun will bring us heat
But we have the power moving from sea to sea

Well Wishes Brother

A firefighter is hospitalized in critical but stable condition after sustaining burns over 42 percent of his body while battling a two alarm blaze in Crown Heights this morning. FDNY units responded to the scene around 9 a.m. at 1102 Prospect Place, where a three-story brownstone was engulfed in flames. Here's video of the fire, via Firefighter Nation. (Be warned, the video shows a firefighter engulfed in flames):

The unidentified firefighter is currently hospitalized at the Cornell Burn Center at New York-Presbyterian Hospital in Manhattan, under heavy sedation but breathing on his own. An FDNY spokesman tells us he sustained burns to his head, face, neck, back, and hands. Another firefighter is also in serious condition at the burn center. Three other firefighters also sustained minor injuries battling the blaze, which was brought under control around 10:15 a.m. No civilians were hurt, and the cause of the fire is currently unknown.

So for about 2 weeks we had a mouse eating food in our trailer. Personally, I never had a problem with the mouse because I always ate my food, kept it in the refrigerator, or took it home.

Unfortunately, the mouse got a little bold and started leaving turds on the tables, eating Petro's sunflower seeds, and Pee Wee's Werther's Originals candy.

The score was Mouse 1 : Recruits 0
Until today... Brian Mann "of war" introduced the mouse to his boot! There's a mouse family missing a daddy right now (taps playing in the distance).

Hazards of Firefighting

When we think of the dangers of a firefighter, we often think of their moments of rescue, running into burning buildings and the possible dangers and wounds that may follow. Certainly these situations present major problems for firefighters all the time, but these can be just the tip of the iceberg as far asthe risks that can come along with being a firefighter.

Researchers have found that firefighters are often at a higher risk in developing testicular cancer, lymphoma, prostate cancer, and myeloma than the normal population. This expanded risk of other diseases involves when firefighters remove their protective gear after leaving a damaged or burning building. When they take off their equipment they could still be in the vicinity of many dangerous areas. Even being in the vicinity of burning or damaged structures can lead to inhalation and exposure to
carcinogenic toxins regularly.

Dr. James Lockey of the University of Cincinnati has taken extensive looks in the past few years into the correlated risk of health problems with firefighters. It was taken on nearly 110,000 firefighters and researched the correlation to around 20 different types of cancer. The percentages of risk varied, but in many cases, they were frightening. For example, there was a 100 percent increase of risk for testicular cancer and 50 percent for lymphoma and multiple myeloma.

Emergency Medical Technicians and paramedics top the list in the 24/7 study, working 188 hours more than average and earning just $30,969 per year at a job that's both physically demanding and mentally taxing. "Because many EMT services run 24 hours a day, employees need to be on call all night," Sauter and Stockdale write. "According to EMT Training Spot, EMTs may find themselves working upwards of 10 hours a day, and 45 hours a week."
